It is the exchange that is classified, not its operator: "DE-CIX Frankfurt " is a Frankfurt exchange even though the DE-CIX group runs exchanges in fifteen countries — the group is spread across many, each of its exchanges sits in one. nine, listed in twelve cities under a single record, is distributed. 55 of the 1 151 active exchanges are, on this count.Series break in 2016 : PeeringDB changed schema. The v1 database ends in March 2016 with 631 exchanges, v2 resumes in May with 561 — not a real-world event but an incomplete migration.Stale periods : CAIDA reports that its copy stopped being refreshed from February to August 2017, then from November 2017 to March 2018. A network present on two VLANs counts once.Distributed or single-city : an exchange carries a DIX chip — a distributed internet exchange — when it is present in at least two metropolitan areas . It is the exchange that is classified, not its operator: "DE-CIX Frankfurt " is a Frankfurt exchange even though the DE-CIX group runs exchanges in fifteen countries — the group is spread across many, each of its exchanges sits in one. nine, listed in twelve cities under a single record, is distributed. 55 of the 1 216 active exchanges are, on this count.Series break in 2016 : PeeringDB changed schema. The v1 database ends in March 2016 with 631 exchanges, v2 resumes in May with 561 — not a real-world event but an incomplete migration.Stale periods : CAIDA reports that its copy stopped being refreshed from February to August 2017, then from November 2017 to March 2018. Those months are imported and flagged; their curves are flat by artefact. 13 months affected.nine holds two PeeringDB records : the European exchange (id 4705 ), the subject of this page, and "nine - six in Paris" (id 5011 ), opened in May 2026, 18 networks.
